A comparison using like or as. Das uses powerful similes throughout the poem: Banalata Sen’s hair is like the ancient darkness of Vidisha; her eyes are like a bird’s nest; the narrator is like a shipwrecked sailor who suddenly sees land. These comparisons are the emotional architecture of the poem.
