A concise, memorable statement expressing a general truth or piece of wisdom. Aphorisms differ from proverbs in that they are typically attributed to a specific author. Examples: “To err is human, to forgive divine” (Alexander Pope). “A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds” (Emerson). Literary works frequently use aphorisms to crystallize a theme in a single line.
