Tragicomedy

A dramatic genre combining elements of both tragedy and comedy — typically featuring serious or potentially fatal conflicts that are ultimately resolved without catastrophe, or mixing tragic and comic scenes. Shakespeare’s late plays (The Winter’s Tale, The Tempest, Cymbeline) are often called tragicomedies or “romances.” The genre challenges the clean generic categories established by Aristotle.
