(Greek: ὕβρις) Excessive pride or arrogant overconfidence, particularly in defying divine or social order. In ancient Greece, hubris was not merely an attitude — it was a legal and religious offense. When applied to Oedipus, it refers to his confidence in defying the oracle and his aggressive certainty during the investigation. It is often confused with hamartia but is more specific: hubris is one type of hamartia, not a synonym.
