An infinitive is the base form of a verb, usually preceded by to (to run, to write, to think). Like gerunds, infinitives can function as nouns, but they can also function as adjectives and adverbs. The distinction between a gerund and an infinitive as a noun is a separate — and equally tricky — area of English grammar.
