A verb that can function both transitively and intransitively, sometimes with the same form appearing in both active and passive-like constructions. Examples: open, close, break, change, move. For instance: “The wind broke the branch” (transitive active) and “The branch broke” (intransitive — no passive needed because the original object has become the subject naturally). These verbs sometimes confuse students attempting voice transformation.
