A narrative technique where a third-person narrator reports a character’s thoughts and feelings so closely that the voice blurs between narrator and character. When we read Swami’s guilt on the walk to school, we feel inside his consciousness without the story switching to first person. Narayan uses this throughout the story to generate sympathy for Swami even when he is behaving badly.
