He is regarded as one of the most significant modernist poets in the Bengali language and one of the most important poets in the broader South Asian literary tradition. His work is characterised by melancholy, nature imagery, temporal dislocation, and the exploration of consciousness. Banalata Sen is his most celebrated poem.
