In communication theory, noise refers to anything that distorts or interferes with a message between the sender and the receiver. It includes literal noise (a loud open-plan office), psychological noise (the receiver is preoccupied with unrelated concerns), semantic noise (the sender uses words the receiver interprets differently), and technical noise (a poor internet connection disrupting a video call). Reducing noise is a primary goal of channel selection and message design in professional communication.
