The antagonist is the character, force, or entity in opposition to the protagonist. The antagonist need not be a villain — it can be a society, a natural force, or even an internal struggle. In Moby-Dick, the white whale functions as antagonist. In The Road by Cormac McCarthy, the post-apocalyptic world itself is the antagonist.
