An anachronism is the placement of something in a time period where it does not belong — either a person, object, idea, or language. In literature, anachronisms may be deliberate (for comic or satirical effect) or accidental (historical errors). Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar famously includes a clock striking the hour, though mechanical clocks did not exist in ancient Rome.
