Derived from Aristotle’s Poetics (4th century BCE), catharsis describes the emotional purification or release experienced by an audience at the climax or resolution of a tragedy. Aristotle argued that tragedy, by arousing pity and fear, ultimately cleanses these emotions and restores psychological balance. The concept remains central to discussions of why humans seek out sad or disturbing art.
