In literary studies, the “canon” refers to the body of works considered to be of the highest literary quality and cultural significance — the texts traditionally studied in academic institutions. The Western literary canon has been the subject of significant debate since the 1980s, with scholars questioning whose voices it centers and whose it excludes. The term derives from the Greek kanon, meaning “rule” or “standard.”
