(Aristotelian definition) A character of noble status who is neither entirely virtuous nor entirely corrupt, whose fall from prosperity to ruin produces catharsis in the audience. Aristotle specified that the fall must arise from hamartia — not from external oppression or pure wickedness. Both Oedipus and Macbeth satisfy this definition, though in dramatically different ways.
