(Greek: Νέμεσις) Divine retribution — the inevitable punishment that follows from hybris or transgression of moral order. In Greek tradition, Nemesis was personified as a goddess who restored cosmic balance. In literary usage, it describes the force of consequence that punishes the tragic hero’s excess. In Oedipus Rex, nemesis is embedded in the oracle; in Macbeth, it arrives through the forces of Malcolm and Macduff.
