Soliloquy

A dramatic device in which a character speaks their innermost thoughts aloud while alone on stage. Shakespeare uses soliloquy extensively in Macbeth to expose the gap between Macbeth’s public actions and his private anguish — making him one of the most psychologically intimate tragic heroes in all of English drama. Greek tragedy had no direct equivalent; interiority was instead conveyed through the chorus and messenger speeches.
