A literary, artistic, and philosophical movement that emerged in the late 18th century as a reaction against rationalism and industrialization. Romanticism emphasized emotion, imagination, the individual, and the sublime power of nature. Coleridge and Wordsworth were two of its earliest and most influential English practitioners.
