A linking verb connects the subject of a sentence to a subject complement. Common linking verbs include is, are, was, were, seem, appear, become, feel, look, smell, sound, taste. When an –ing form follows a linking verb, the function determines whether it is a gerund or a present participle acting as a predicate adjective.
