A subject complement is a word or phrase that follows a linking verb and either renames or describes the subject. Gerunds often appear as subject complements (Her dream is dancing), and so do predicate adjectives formed from present participles (He is captivating). The key test: does it rename (gerund) or describe (present participle)?
