The flow of information from lower to higher levels in an organisational hierarchy. Upward communication includes employee feedback, performance reports, problem escalations, and suggestions from frontline staff. It is widely recognised as the most structurally suppressed form of internal communication. Organisations with strong upward communication cultures make better decisions because leadership operates with more complete information. Psychological safety, the belief that one can speak up without fear of punishment, is the primary condition that enables effective upward communication.
