The doer of the action in a passive sentence, typically introduced by the preposition by. In “The book was written by Tagore,” Tagore is the agent. The agent is omitted when the doer is unknown (“The window was broken”), obvious from context, or unimportant to the message. Retaining an unnecessary agent phrase is considered weak style in formal writing.
