Ellipsis (Narrative) In narrative theory, an ellipsis is a gap or omission in the telling of a story — a period of time that passes without being narrated. It differs from typographical ellipsis (the “…” of omitted words). Authors use narrative ellipsis to control pacing, skip over time, and guide reader attention. The jump cuts in Mrs Dalloway and the chapter-gap silences in To Kill a Mockingbird are examples.
