A sense of impending misfortune or evil — related to foreshadowing, but more atmospheric than structural. While foreshadowing plants specific narrative clues, foreboding creates a generalized mood of dread. The opening storms in King Lear, the moors in Wuthering Heights, and the recurring dreams in Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier all generate foreboding.
