The placement of two contrasting elements side by side in order to highlight their differences or create meaning through contrast. Juxtaposition operates at every level of literature: word choice (“a deafening silence”), character (*Jem and Boo Radley in To Kill a Mockingbird), setting (the rich and poor worlds in Bleak House), or theme.
