A participial phrase begins with a participle (present or past) and includes any associated modifiers or complements. Unlike a gerund phrase, the participial phrase functions as an adjective, modifying a noun or pronoun. Participial phrases that appear at the start of a sentence must clearly refer to the subject of the main clause, or they become dangling modifiers.
