A type of extended metaphor, popularised by Petrarch, in which the beloved is compared to extreme and often contradictory things (e.g., a fire that freezes, a war that brings peace). Shakespeare famously parodied this convention in Sonnet 130 (“My mistress’ eyes are nothing like the sun”).
