Poetry that does not follow regular meter or rhyme schemes. Free verse does not mean unstructured — poets choose line breaks, rhythms, and sound patterns deliberately, but without fixed formal rules. Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass popularized free verse in American literature. Most contemporary poetry is written in free verse. The term comes from the French vers libre.
