Lacuna

Latin for “pit” or “hole.” In literary and textual scholarship, a lacuna is a gap, missing portion, or omission in a manuscript or text. In narrative theory, it refers to a meaningful silence or absence in a story — what is left unsaid or deliberately withheld. The concept is central to feminist and postcolonial literary criticism, which often examines whose voices and stories are absent from the literary record.
