A literary mode or genre depicting rural or natural life, typically in an idealized way. The pastoral tradition originates in ancient Greek poetry (Theocritus) and was developed by Virgil in his Eclogues. Renaissance poets revived it enthusiastically. In the modern era, pastoral literature often functions critically — contrasting idealized nature against corrupt civilization. Thomas Hardy’s Wessex novels engage with the pastoral while exposing its limitations.
