A verb that requires a direct object to complete its meaning. Voice change is only possible with transitive verbs, because the object of the active sentence becomes the subject of the passive sentence. Examples: write, build, arrest, complete, teach. Contrast with intransitive verbs, which take no object and cannot be passivised.
